IJAAWB is a peer-reviewed, open-access academic journal dedicated to advancing global scholarship on ageing and wellbeing across social, cultural, environmental, and policy contexts. The journal is an integral part of the Ageing and Wellbeing Initiative, an independent global academic initiative fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and policy-relevant research on population ageing worldwide.
Scope of the Journal
IJAAWB welcomes original and innovative contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
- Population ageing and social transformation
- Wellbeing, quality of life, and later-life inequalities
- Ageing, health systems, and care arrangements
- Environmental change, climate risks, and ageing populations
- Urbanisation, housing, and age-friendly environments
- Social policy, governance, and welfare regimes
- Intergenerational relations and family dynamics
- Comparative and global perspectives on ageing
- Ethical and normative dimensions of wellbeing in later life
Article Types and Length Requirements
IJAAWB publishes the following categories of manuscripts. Word limits exclude references.
- Original Research Articles
Length: 3,500–6,000 words
Original Research Articles report empirical studies using quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, or comparative designs. Submissions should present original findings and demonstrate clear methodological rigor and theoretical or policy relevance.
All Original Research Articles undergo external peer review by at least two independent reviewers.
- Review Articles
Length: 4,000–8,000 words
Review Articles provide systematic, scoping, or critical syntheses of existing literature. Submissions should offer conceptual clarity, identify research gaps, and advance understanding of ageing and wellbeing.
All Review Articles undergo external peer review. - Perspectives
Length: 3,000–5,000 words
Perspectives are scholarly essays that develop conceptual arguments, theoretical reflections, or critical analyses of emerging debates, policy developments, or methodological innovations in ageing and wellbeing research.
Perspectives may undergo external peer review or editorial review, at the discretion of the Editorial Board. - Opinion Articles
Length: 2,000–4,000 words
Opinion Articles present well-argued viewpoints on timely, contested, or emerging issues relevant to ageing and wellbeing. These contributions may include normative reflections, policy commentaries, or agenda-setting arguments.
Opinion Articles are assessed by the editors and may undergo editorial review or external peer review, depending on their nature and contribution. - Letters
Length: 800–2,000 words
Letters include concise scholarly communications, responses to previously published articles, or brief commentaries on current issues within the journal’s scope.
Letters are reviewed editorially and are not normally subject to external peer review.
Peer Review Transparency
Selected invited Perspectives, Opinion Articles, and Letters may be exempt from external peer review, subject to editorial assessment and transparency standards.
External peer review is conducted anonymously unless otherwise specified.
Editorial review decisions are documented and overseen by the Editorial Board.
